Our nativity scene goes on sale

New addition in October

The return to the Wendt & Kühn collection of a very special design from our grand design legacy has been eagerly anticipated. Before it even went on sale we had already received hundreds of orders for this nativity scene designed by Grete Wendt in 1910/1911, before the company was founded. Mary, Joseph, the Child in the crib and a nativity angel are the first four figurines that will have everyone’s eye on them this Advent. After a rather longer drying time than had been anticipated, the wait is now over and the figurines are available to purchase from our specialist retailers and our in-house stores in Grünhainichen and Seiffen.

    A Christmas round

    Decorating idea

Music Boxes from Wendt & Kühn bring the true spirit of Christmas to your home, either alone or combined with coordinating figurines. Let yourself be inspired by the scene on the top of your music box. Many of the figures there are also available as individual figurines. Here, for example, are the pixies narrating the story of the music box. As they do so they add an additional charm to the scene – as though they are watching as Santa brings the sack full of presents that they have filled to the children. The tall trees in two different heights enhance the atmosphere.

The music boxes and figurines are available from our in-house stores in Grünhainichen and Seiffen and from your local retailer.

      Wendt & Kühn Illuminated

      Christmas Magic in Grünhainichen

For the last decades, open house days at Wendt & Kühn on the first weekend of Advent have had a fixed place in the calendar. Last year, for the first time, we were unable to hold this popular event. This year we have also decided against holding an event inside the workshop. Instead, we want to transform the manufactory into an inspirational setting for
“Wendt & Kühn Illuminated,” and we are confident that the event will take place as scheduled from November 24-28, 2021. As soon as dusk falls, we will surround the buildings and outdoor areas in wonderous light. The walls will become screens for films and photos, and open spaces will transform into stages for live music and singing. Among this artful and impressive display, visitors will not only experience the craftsmanship, but also an excerpt from the traditional manufactory’s 106-year history. At certain locations, the view opens up to offer a view of the illuminated inner rooms, revealing how the Angel Musicians and Christmas tree decorations are created. The event will be held in German.

          Golden Autumn

          Recommendation of the month

The friends of our Blossom Kinder herald in the autumn with their brightly colored lanterns. But they are not to be deterred by the cooler temperatures. The beautiful autumn sun allows them to enjoy just as much fun outdoors, surrounded by the vivid colors of nature, as in the summer – on long autumn hikes or at lantern parades for Halloween.  And if the temperature does drop, the lantern children are warmly dressed in jackets, long pants and smart hats.

The Girl with the Round Lantern and the Boy with the Long Lantern are available from our in-house stores in Grünhainichen and Seiffen and from your local retailer.

Our original plan was to start selling this group at the beginning of October. However, our final quality check revealed that the figurines are not yet ready to be packed and shipped. Having been painted they now require more time to dry, until October 18. This means that we will all have to be patient for a little while longer.

                      Olly Wendt – A Portrait

                      An opportunity to purchase

One name is inextricably linked with Wendt & Kühn: Olly Wendt (née Sommer). To mark her 125th birthday in 2021 we have produced a book in a limited edition of 1,920 copies. The number of copies corresponds to the year in which this talented designer started working at the Grünhainichen manufactory, five years after the foundation of Wendt & Kühn.
Through a series of individual episodes emerges an authentic portrait of this exceptional personality.

We will send your copy to your home address.

                          Fairy tale time is approaching

                          Recommendation of the month

With September the days are getting markedly shorter. Following a glorious summer in the great outdoors, we are now entering the season for cozy indoor pursuits. As well as the golden days of autumn we can also expect some cold and rainy ones. And then the time of reading and playing games begins. A wealth of fairy tales is waiting to be read aloud once again - like “The Sterntaler” by the Brothers Grimm. With her red dress and apron full of stars that have fallen from the sky, our figurine the “Sterntaler Girl” recalls the heroine of this fairy tale. And when the covers of the book are finally closed, it is time to get out the matching jigsaw puzzle. A wonderful activity to do indoors in miserable autumnal weather.

The “Sterntaler Girl” and matching jigsaw puzzle are available from our in-house stores in Grünhainichen and Seiffen and from your local retailer.

                            A sleek and elegant composition

                            New additions for autumn

A very special design from our grand design legacy is returning to the Wendt & Kühn collection and will attract everyone’s attention during Advent. It is the nativity scene that Grete Wendt designed in 1910/1911 before the company was even founded. The first four figurines to be released this year are Mary, Joseph, the child in the crib and a nativity angel. Further figurines will be added over the next few years until the original scene is complete. Grete Wendt’s design was way ahead of its time. Its straight lines and minimalist style are akin to the language of form we would have first expected from the artists of the Bauhaus in 1919. To this day the group of figurines is characterized by its modern design and impresses us with its clean lines.

                              Swinging into the New Year

                              Celestial companions

The Christmas tree angels from Wendt & Kühn have once again provided the spirit of Christmas. And now we ring out the Christmas season with them. Here in the Erzgebirge, they traditionally stay with us until Candlemas on February 2. The sounds of the saxophone, harmonica, maracas and clarinet can still be clearly distinguished. These are the instruments of our new angels on celestial bodies and our suspended Grünhainichen Angel® and Marguerite Angel, all of whom joined the collection in the fall. Another angel with beautifully wrapped gifts on its knee perches in the branches on a golden clip and along with the small Santa Claus on a Star observes for a while the happy goings-on in this new year.

                                365 days of good fortune

                                New additions for autumn

We are celebrating a silver jubilee: This is the 25th time that a Wendt & Kühn calendar will accompany friends of the manufactory into a new year. We are marking the occasion with a very special calendar angel carrying a silver-colored four-leaf-clover. This should bring luck to its owners for every one of the 365 days in 2022.

                                      Sustainable craftsmanship

                                      Insights

With our figurines and music boxes lovingly fashioned by hand, we form part of the artisan tradition of the Erzgebirge region. And with this tradition comes responsibility, as our most important raw material is timber. Our aim is to use this local raw material conscientiously and sparingly, and to preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. At Wendt & Kühn we of course ensure to design our production processes sustainably and save resources. Find out more about sustainability at Wendt & Kühn.

Summertime is berry season! This group of diligent pickers have been very successful in their quest for delicious fruits such as blueberries, wild strawberries, and red and black currants. Protected from the warm July sun by hats and headscarves, they roam through the nearby woods and meadows. When they stop for a break in the shady forest they will certainly have sampled some of their berries. And now they are heading home, their baskets and jugs brimming with fruit ready to be made into something delicious. What will it be? Red berry compote, blueberry pie or perhaps jam?

The Berry Pickers are available from our in-house stores in Grünhainichen and Seiffen and  from your local retailer.

                                              When Angels go to sleep

                                              Our Tip

During Advent and Christmas our Angels worked all hours. As an orchestra they played tune after tune, as Christmas tree decorations they made eyes shine, fastened to golden clips they added the finishing touch to gifts, and they decorated the festive table with style. So now these Angels need their well-deserved summer sleep. There are a couple of things you can do to ensure that they will look their very best next Advent. Choose somewhere for your Angels to sleep that is not too damp and is not subject to wide temperature fluctuations. Over time, moisture causes the paint to flake off and wide fluctuations in temperature can make the wood crack. Also, wrap each Angel individually, preferably in tissue paper. This will keep the moisture at bay.

The Slumber Vault has been specially designed for your Angel Musicians. Its 36 velour-lined compartments in different sizes will ensure your Angels sleep in peace. Even the Angel at Grand Piano is well protected. The Special Slumber Vault provides the perfect summer home for your Christmas Tree Angels, Angels on Comet Tails, Stars and Moons and Angels on Clips. A place where your Angels can rest until their next grand entrance

                                              Come, let’s read!

                                              International Children’s Book Day

“Reading books means travelling to distant worlds, away from our living rooms, and over the stars.” These words of the German poet Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (known as Jean Paul) aptly describe the worlds opened up to us through books. When we read we can, for example, fly through Neverland with Peter Pan, go on adventures in the South Seas with the mighty Pippi Longstocking or learn to cast spells with Harry Potter at Hogwarts. “International Children’s Book Day” has been celebrated around the world since 1967 – always on April 2nd and always with a different theme. The date was chosen by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in honor of the Danish poet and writer Hans Christian Andersen, who was born on this day in the year 1805. The USA is the sponsor this year, and with its motto “The Music of Words” it wants to remind us that “Words are drumbeats and flutes on the page”. The angel in our book “How the Angel Got His Eleven Dots” wants nothing more than to be able to play his shawm in the large orchestra. A book for reading aloud, for reading to yourself and for reading together.

                                              Pencils ready,
                                              get set, go!

A tip for time at home

Christmas 2020 and the time that follows – these will be days full of peace and quiet. With time for the family and for oneself. Time to relax and do something creative. Using our coloring sheets, painting enthusiasts of all ages can enter a world full of imagination. Help the Marguerite Angels to wrap presents, make music and play along with the celestial Angel Musicians, stride through the snow with Santa Claus, travel to the Antarctic to meet the cheeky little penguins, or enter the world of fairy tales and bring Cinderella, the Sterntaler Girl, and Red Riding Hood and the Wolf to life.

We hope you have great fun coloring them in.

                                              When Angels go to sleep

                                              Our Tip

During Advent and Christmas, our angels have played many rounds as an orchestra, made eyes light up as Christmas tree decorations, made gifts eye-catching on golden clips, or decorated the festive table in style. Now the angels have well earned their summer sleep. Safe they rest in a slumber vault: There is room for 36 angels in compartments lined with velour in different sizes. The special slumber vault offers your Christmas tree angels, the angels on tail, comet, star and moon as well as the angels on clip an optimal summer place. Here they linger until their next big appearance.
